Wind Bike

The challenge

Most of the time, the weather in the Netherlands is very windy. For students and citizens who do not have a car or a scooter, cycling every day to school, university or work might become a challenge. The wind becomes the enemy and the cyclist's speed is thus slowed. Therefore, many of us might be discouraged to travel under these conditions and our idea is to create something new, a sustainable alternative that would make travelling easier and fun for everyone.

The solution

Our proposed solution is to create a device for bikes that uses wind energy to give a boost while cycling in very windy conditions. Just like an electric bike needs an electric motor and battery to function, we want our bike to function on wind energy only to give a small boost to the cyclist. Our aim is not to replace the electric bikes, but to redesign the concept using wind energy as our primary source of power. As it is presented in the pictures below, we want the device to be an accessory to the bike, installed either in front and back or on the sides of the bike so that the balance of the steering wheels is not disrupted. At the same time, placing the device there, it would have access to the wind while cycling.
